Meet Sylvia Martin: Candidate

Hi from my home in Carlington, near Carling and Kirkwood!  I have lived in this neighborhood going on about six years now.  Prior to my Carlington residence I lived in the Mooney's Bay area.  I grew up in the centre of Ottawa on James Street near Percy.  Ottawa has been my only home, both my mom and dad had also been born in Ottawa.  Mom in what today is considered the Bells Corners area, and dad, was born in the part of the city, the french quarter as it were, in Overbrook aka Vanier aka Ottawa.

Glebe Collegiate was my High School of choice, follwed by La Fortune Business College on Sussex during a time when it was felt by most, that a girl was supposed to go to secretarial school.  Thank goodness those days of archaic thinking is over!

I decided to go to Algonquin College a few times, decades apart to take courses that I thought would take me on different career paths:  Commercial Design, Graphic Arts, Lost Wax Casting, Precision Metal Fabrication.  The latter did direct me into the blue collar manufacturing arena for about 15 years.  After which, I went back to teaching seniors the Art of Mandala, and working with clay as an alternative means to pain management.  The Education connection just kept calling me out.

Office Administrator / Communications Liaison with DFAIT during a particular contract period, and then back to fascilitating workshops.

Have to admit, my most rewarding life changer...being a "mum","mutter" to two absolutely amazing people who worked very hard to meet their own challenges and graduate with a post secondary education.

I graduated from York University (Toronto) with an Hons. BFA in Studio and Arts Management.  Followed by a career teaching grade 8 in Studio Art and Canadian History I left the formality of the "institution" to teach art, design and photography via community centres and the Oxford Mills Public Library.  My most challenging student at that time?  My mom, who insisted on registering for most of my evening adult classes!
